CAD systems are at the core of product development. In order to be able to develop and manufacture innovative products, a multitude of functionalities are needed. Among these are the design of sculptured or free-form surfaces and parametric component design, as well as maintenance of the materials made available by a CAD system. However, it is often also necessary to extend the functions of mature CAD programs - e.g. to enable automated design of 3D turbine blades or linking a CAD system with a PDM system.
